New Thousand Dollar Bill

The new design of the 1000-dollar Federal Reserve note features Grover Cleveland, our 22nd and 24th President. President Cleveland was featured previously on the 1000-dollar note the last time it was issued in 1969.

Born in Caldwell, N.J., Cleveland served as mayor of Buffalo, N.Y., and New York governor before his election to presidency in 1884 as the nominee of the Democratic Party, the first member of his party to serve in that office since prior to the Civil War. Cleveland was defeated for re-election in 1888 by Benjamin Harrison, who won the electoral vote despite losing the popular vote to Cleveland. Cleveland defeated Harrison four years later in 1892 and served a second four-year term.

The back of the note features the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, as well as the skyline of lower Manhattan. The view is approximately what one would have observed from Hoboken, N.J. prior to Sept. 11, 2001.
